THE STORY WE tell and the
character that we cast for ourselves within our
plotline play a role in how we behave in the world.
Sometimes we tell the story that we are a victim, and so
we tend to respond to our world as if it is a vast conspiracy
hell-bent on knocking us down. Sometimes we tell the story that
we are kind and giving, and we respond to the world with open-armed
generosity. Neither story is right or wrong, and any story may open us to love
or to hurt. In the rooms of our psyche we have a whole collection of masks that we
may wear depending on the company we are in, on our mood, on the circumstances of
life, on how much sun is breaking through today’s clouds.
